Combined Jewish Philanthropies and Jewish Federation of North Shore in merger talks

The Jewish Federation of the North Shore and Combined Jewish Philanthropies could merge by 2013, according to a statement from the two organizations.

The two groups approved a letter of intent detailing a proposed merger, according to the statement released on Friday.

“We already share a strong commitment to serving the Jewish community and we are excited to take the next step toward combining our unique strengths into one organization,” federation leaders said in the statement.

The Jewish Federation of the North Shore, which opened in 1938, “seeks to build a vibrant Jewish community and to raise the funds necessary to help Jews and Jewish agencies on the North Shore, in Israel and around the world - wherever there is need,” according to their website.

The Combined Jewish Philanthropies began in 1960 with the merger of the Combined Jewish Appeal and Associated Jewish Philanthropies and serves Greater Boston, according to their website.

“Rooted in compassion and justice and driven by innovation, we care for the vulnerable, forge strong connections with Israel and above all, inspire the next generation to embrace Jewish life and learning,” Combined Jewish Philanthropies members said on their website.

Members of each group will formulate a merger plan together over the next several months, which will be voted on by the boards of each organization, according to the statement.

“We believe that together we will better serve our combined communities,” leaders said in the statement.
