Scott Brown finance aide declares candidacy
Kirsten Hughes declared her candidacy for chairwoman of the Massachusetts Republican Party a day after the current chairman announced he would not seek reelection next month.
Hughes told state committee members of her plans in a letter released today. A former political field director for the MassGOP who ran the party’s state convention in 2010, Hughes is a Quincy city councilor who was elected last year in a district with only 10 percent Republicans, she wrote.
“It was during my time working at the MassGOP helping others run their campaigns (and by running my own campaign for elected office) that I discovered the value of our Republican town and city committees to local candidates,” she wrote.
Hughes, a professional singer and an attorney, also served as deputy finance director for the unsuccessful reelection campaign of US Senator Scott Brown. Two state committee members told the Globe Wednesday that Brown is pushing to install Hughes as chairman as he positions for his next political move.
The current chairman, Robert A. Maginn Jr., told state committee members Wednesday that he would not run for reelection in January.
