“I’m sure I spend more time with my computer than with my wife. It’s hard to believe that sometimes, and it’s a little disturbing. But I think that’s most people’s daily reality,” he says. “So I’ve accidentally made something relevant.”
As for mumblecore, that variously celebrated and maligned indie film movement whose moniker he helped to popularize, Bujalski has made peace with his status as one of its unlikely stars. “You can put it on my tombstone,” he says.
“That word has traveled further and had more currency than any of my individual movies. When I was in Berlin in February, I had interviews with journalists from all over the world who were asking me about mumblecore. I just wish I could make a movie with that kind of reach.”
