The AL central champs won the season series against the Red Sox, 4 games to 3, but the Red Sox got the better of the Tigers in the last series at Fenway Park, which included two of the most memorable games of the season. On Sept. 3, Tigers ace Max Scherzer was denied win No. 20 when he was outdueled by Sox lefty Jon Lester at Fenway Park in classic 2-1 pitching duel. The following night, the Sox broke out the big lumber to the tune of 20 runs and a franchise-record eight home runs in an epic mauling of the Tigers.
David Ortiz leads the Red Sox with a whopping .357/.419/.821 slash line against Detroit. And shortstop Stephen Drew checks in with robust .333/.462/.619 line. The 20-run game helped to give the Sox a team .902 OPS vs. the Tigers. Jon Lester has two wins against the Tigers, but Jon Lackey has a better ERA (3.14 vs. 4.26) in picking up a loss in his two starts.
Interesting to note that it was Sox hurlers Andrew Bailey, Allen Webster, and Andrew Miller that picked up the three losses in Detroit in June. None of them will be taking the hill for the Sox in October.
