House Ethics Committee votes to recommend expulsion for state Representative Henriquez

The House Ethics Committee voted unanimously on Tuesday night to recommend lawmakers expel state Representative Carlos Henriquez, who is serving six months in jail for assaulting a woman.

The House will likely vote as early as Thursday on whether to force Henriquez from the chamber. Henriquez appeared for more than six hours before the disciplinary panel on Tuesday, his third stint before a committee whose proceedings are by rule secret.

The second-term Dorchester Democrat was convicted in January of holding down a woman and punching her in the chest when she refused to have sex with him. He is appealing, and his attorney has questioned the fairness of his trial, asserting that he was tried by an all-white jury.
