A 69-year-old former Cambridge police officer pleaded not guilty today to a charge that he struck a man on Massachusetts Avenue Wednesday morning and fled the scene, leaving the victim in critical condition.

Lawrence Stead of Quincy was driving home from work at around 6 a.m. when he hit the man, Assistant District Attorney Emily Hamrock said. Stead allegedly pulled his car over, checked it for damage, and then drove away, leaving the victim lying in the street with his shoe and hearing aid knocked off.

The man remains in critical and unstable condition, Hamrock said.
