Clean Harbors rises to record after earnings
Clean Harbors Inc., a provider of waste-management services, rose to its highest price since it went public 25 years ago after reporting earnings that beat analysts’ estimates. Clean Harbors gained 7.2 percent to $70.31 in early afternoon trading after hitting $71.63, the highest price since it went public in 1987. The Norwell-based company today reported fourth-quarter earnings of 72 cents a share, beating the average estimate of 49 cents of seven analysts compiled by Bloomberg.

In the face of rising gasoline prices, US Representative Edward J. Markey and two other lawmakers today called on the Obama administration to help drive down the fuel’s costs by releasing crude oil -- used to make gas -- from the nation’s strategic petroleum reserve. Gas prices have spiked most recently as tensions with Iran have escalated over fears that the dispute over Iran’s nuclear programs will disrupt global oil supplies. American Well, a privately held Boston company that uses technology to bring health care services into the homes and workplaces of patients, plans to collaborate with Joslin Diabetes Center to make Joslin’s diabetes expertise more accessible to patients nationwide. American Well’s focus is so-called “teleheath services,” which allows patients to have one-on-on video conferences with medical professionals or ask those professionals questions either through texting or phone calls. Joslin Diabetes Center is a teaching and research affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

Rising sales of scientific instruments helped Bruker Corp.’s fourth-quarter profit jump 33 percent. Bruker said today that its profit rose to $39.1 million, or 23 cents per share, from $29.3 million, or 18 cents per share. Excluding one-time charges, Billerica-based Bruker said it earned 31 cents per share. That beat Wall Street expectations for 29 cents per share, according to a FactSet poll.

Protesters gathered at lunch time today across the street from Bain Capital’s headquarters in Boston, criticizing the firm and Mitt Romney for what they called killing jobs out of greed. “They have made a business out of killing jobs for profit,” said Jason Stephany, spokesman for the group MassUniting.org, which led the protest. MassUniting says it is a coalition of labor and faith-based groups. A few dozen people participated in the event, which featured a black coffin on the Copley Square green and three trumpeters playing Taps.

Zipcar Inc., the Cambridge-based car-sharing service that rents cars by the hour, said it is investing in a $13.7 million Series A round of funding for a California company that targets so-called “peer-to-peer” car-sharing services to college students. The California company is Wheelz Inc., which has devised a car sharing platform designed to connect students who own cars with students who want to pay to borrow them.

Shire plc announced today that European regulators have approved the production of the company’s treatment for Gaucher disease at Shire’s manufacturing facility in Lexington.
Gaucher disease is a genetic disorder that causes waste to accumulate in the body. Shire’s drug, Vpriv, is a rival to Cerezyme, a drug that is made by Genzyme Corp., now a unit of the French drug maker Sanofi SA.

MassDevelopment, the state’s finance and development authority, said it has provided up to $2.5 million in term financing to Quiet Logistics, a robotic fulfillment specialist that helps e-commerce retailers get orders to their customers. “Quiet Logistics will use loan proceeds for both equipment and working capital to meet the cost of expanding its distribution center in Devens,” MassDevelopment said. The new operation has the potential to create up to 300 jobs over the next few years.

Bluefin Robotics said today that is joining with the Columbia Group to invest in a next generation large submersible vehicle. Quincy-based Bluefin specializes in the design and manufacture of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles, or UUVs. The Columbia Group is developing the mechanical and electrical systems for a large undersea vehicle called Proteus. The Proteus is capable of operation in either manned or autonomous modes, and Bluefin’s autonomy technology is being incorporated for use in unmanned missions.

Jumptap, a Cambridge company that helps their clients target their mobile advertising, said that a recent marketing campaign on behalf of Vibram FiveFingers shoes persuaded many consumers to check out Vibram’s online store. Jumptap worked with two other agencies to develop a special ad that sought to engage consumers on their smartphones and other mobile devices. The ads drove three out of every five viewers who engaged with the ad to Vibram’s online store, Jumptap said.

The Boston Beer Co., best known for its Samuel Adams brand line of brews, said it is preparing a special commemorative beer to mark the 2012 Boston Marathon. The company is planning to unveil “Samuel Adams Boston 26.2 Brew” at a news conference scheduled for Thursday at the Samuel Adams Brewery. At the conference, Boston Beer is expected to formally announce its first-ever partnership with the Boston Athletic Association, which manages the Boston Marathon.

A tracking system devised by Visible Measures Corp. has been granted industry accreditation for measuring the performance of online video viewed on social media. Visible Measures, a company with offices in Boston, describes its Metrics tracking system as an analytics and advertising platform. The Media Rating Council, an industry group that audits and accredits media measurement services, has voted to grant accreditation to a range of Visible Measures’ metrics for digital video, the company said.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which has already announced plans to open its first grocery store in the northeast in Somerville, is planning to open a second grocery market in West Hartford, Conn by the end of 2012. Both stores, offering fresh produce and other groceries, would be less than half the size of Walmart’s typical discount superstores. It’s unclear which will open first.

Reporters Jenn Abelson and Beth Daley won in the feature and explanatory categories for “Fishy Business.” The series also won for “creative use across multiple platforms.” The Business section staff was honored in the breaking news category for coverage of the 634-point drop in the Dow on Aug. 8.
