Boston-area hotels continued their recovery last year, with occupancy, daily room rates, and overall revenues per available room all rising, according to reports by the hotel consultancies Pinnacle Advisory Group and PKF Consulting USA.

The nearly 74 percent average occupancy was the highest since 2008, according to PKF, and 2011 average room rates ($171) and revenue per room ($126) were the highest since 2009. The year to beat is 2007, which had an average revenue per available room of $159.

Nationwide, occupancy rose more than 4 percent to 60 percent, the average daily rate went up nearly 4 percent to $101, and revenue per available room increased 8 percent to $61, according to Smith Travel Research Inc. Last year was the first time since 2008 that the hotel industry topped 60 percent occupancy and a $100 average room rate.
