Medford becomes last MA town to get FiOS TV
Medford today became the last Massachusetts community to begin Verizon FiOS TV service, at least for the foreseeable future.
Verizon revealed in 2010 that it would no longer expand FiOS into unserved communities, after investing $23 billion nationwide. There are 112 Massachusetts cities and towns receiving FiOS service.
It took two years to negotiate the franchise agreement in Medford, which was signed Feb. 3, according to Verizon spokesman Phil Santoro. Most of the FiOS network in Medford was complete when the company made public its decision to cease expansion into new communities, he added, and the company and local officials agreed to halt the buildout rather than make the service available to all residents. Up to 75 percent of Medford residents will be able to receive FiOS service, he added.
Verizon has no plans to add more communities to the FiOS network, according to Santoro. “We are finishing all of the communities that we have begun,” he said. “We’re still building out every community where we are” across the country.
