Utah company Gemstone takes over management of Boston’s Copley Square Hotel
The century-old Copley Square Hotel is under new management. Gemstone Hotels & Resorts, based in Park City, Utah, has taken over running the 143-room Huntington Avenue hotel from Interstate Hotels & Resorts, Gemstone said today. The boutique hotel underwent a nearly $20 million renovation in 2009, and the new management company says it plans to update the food and beverage service, and do more to take advantage of the hotel’s location, though it declined to give details.
Gemstone manages 15 properties, specializing in upscale “urban resorts,” said Gemstone principal Thomas Prins. The Copley Square Hotel -- the company’s first Boston property -- was given AAA’s four-diamond award in 2011.
“The Copley Square Hotel is almost tailor-made for what we do, so it was an absolutely perfect match,” Prins said.
Gemstone did have a local connection prior to the Copley deal -- company principal Jeff McIntyre was raised in Hingham.
