Water service was fully restored this evening after about 500 Belmont residents had experienced decreased water pressure or lack of service due to four water-main breaks that occurred throughout the town, starting on Friday afternoon and continuing into the night, Belmont Water officials said.

About 200 of those residents experienced no water access for a few hours during the breaks, and businesses in the center of town were also affected, according to Belmont Water Division Manager Michael Bishop.

The first main break occurred on Sherman Street Friday afternoon and water was restored that night. The other three breaks occurred late Friday night and the final break was repaired at about 8:10 p.m. tonight.

The causes of the separate breaks are still under investigation, but Bishop said the breaks could have resulted from a pressure spike, or residual air in the system. He said construction from the town’s yearly water main improvement project could have also potentially contributed.

Belmont police, the Water Division, and a private contractor responded to the breaks.
