Boston police increase patrols as ‘precaution’ due to warning of 9/11 terror attack
Massachusetts law enforcement officials say they are increasing patrols in the wake of warnings by the FBI that terrorists are planning an attack on Washington, D.C., or New York City on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
However, both Massachusetts State Police and Boston police said they have been told by the FBI that there is no known threat being made against the state or the city.
“As a precaution, although there is no specific threat to Boston, we will be increasing patrols and asking officers to heighten vigilance,’’ Boston police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said in an email sent to media outlets today.
State Police Colonel Marian J. McGovern said in a statement last night that the classified briefing provided by the FBI indicates that “the threat information focuses on Washington, D.C., and New York City, and contains no known nexus to Massachusetts and the rest of New England.’’
Law enforcement officials asked the public to do what police are doing this weekend -- be alert and report suspicious activity to police so they can investigate.
