Driver killed in crash on I-93 in Medford
A man died this afternoon after his car was struck by a tire that had come off the flatbed of a tractor-trailer truck on Interstate 93 in Somerville, State Police said.
The victim, who was in his 20s, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was pronounced dead, said State Police spokesman Dave Procopio.
State Police said preliminary investigation indicated the tractor-trailer was on the southbound side when the tire came loose, flew into the northbound side of the highway, and hit the man’s car.
Police cars and fire trucks could be seen near Exit 28 at around 3:20 p.m. The car could be seen flipped on its side, with its top smashed in.
State Police warned of traffic delays in the area.
