Falmouth man killed in Route 28 crash
An 80-year-old Falmouth man was killed in a two-car crash Friday in Bourne, State Police said.
The victim, Kenneth Smith, was driving a 2005 Jeep Liberty southbound on Route 28 when it hit the back of a 2004 Peterbilt tractor trailer disabled in the left travel lane, a statement from State Police said.
State Police responded around 5:35 p.m. and found Smith trapped in his car. He had to be extricated by the Bourne Fire Department. Smith was pronounced dead at Falmouth Hospital, according to State Police.
State Police said the tractor trailer, owned by Cavossa Disposal of Falmouth, was carrying two empty refuse containers. State Police said preliminary reports did not indicate whether or not the containers fell on the car after the collision.
The 47-year-old driver of the tractor trailer was not injured. The driver, who was not identified, was from Falmouth, according to police.
State Police have not issued any citations or charges, and the accident remains under investigation, according to the statement.
Traffic was diverted to the breakdown lane as both travel lanes were closed for about four hours after the accident, State Police said.
