A Somerville man died after being struck by a motor vehicle this morning in the Thomas P. O’Neill Jr. Tunnel, State Police said.
The 2000 Honda Pilot sport utility vehicle driven by David Dang, 75, was involved in a minor accident with a dark-colored mid-sized sedan in the southbound lane of I-93, said State Police spokesman David Procopio. The two drivers pulled over onto the right shoulder of the road and got out of their cars to exchange information.
Dang returned to the driver’s side of his car, but before he was able to open the door, he was struck by another vehicle, a 2006 Toyota RAV4 SUV, State Police said in a statement.
Dang was taken to Boston Medical Center in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the sedan, though present at the time of the fatal accident, left the scene before police arrived.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Dang, a 64-year-old Ayer man, stayed at the scene after the crash, which happened at about 8:17 a.m. after Exit 20. State Police interviewed the man and continue to investigate whether charges are warranted.
The accident caused traffic delays on Interstate 93 south leading into the tunnel this morning.
