Two people died today after being overcome by carbon monoxide in their home in Palmer, according to the state Department of Fire Services.

Fire officials said the carbon monoxide came from an “alternative heating device” being used because of the weekend snowstorm.

They are the second and third people to die from carbon monoxide poisoning this week. Eight other people have been hospitalized from the odorless gas since the storm.

State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan is holding a 9 p.m. press conference at the Palmer fire station, in Hampden County, about 20 miles east of Springfield. More details are expected to be released at that time.
