Breweries, nightspots and history on tap for Super Bowl bet between Menino and Bloomberg

The mayors of Boston and New York today announced the traditional Super Bowl bet between municipal leaders, but this one has a tourism twist: A lucky family from the winning city will be treated to a free trip to take in the sights and sample the attractions of the losing city.

In a joint news release, Mayors Thomas Menino and Michael Bloomberg said today the family (of up to four people) will get a “Super Tour” in one of their cities that will include two nights in a hotel, dinners, performances, and even tours of local breweries.

If the New England Patriots beat the New York Giants, a family from Boston will be flown to New York. If the Giants win, a family from New York will be flown here.

The fortunate family will be chosen from an online drawing after the game. People will be able to enter the drawing by filling out an entry form on the winning city’s website. Only Boston and New York City residents will be able to enter, Menino’s office said.

“I have a lot of faith in the Patriots. They carried us this far, and I hope they’ll carry the Vince Lombardi Trophy right back to Boston,” Menino said in a statement. “But either on the field or off, the City of Boston wins by being able to showcase some of the best our great city has to offer.”

Bloomberg, a Medford native, was equally confident in the Giants.

“I know the Giants are going to win next Sunday and bring home the trophy they’ve been working toward ever since the last time they beat the Patriots,” Bloomberg said. “I thought everyone should have a chance to experience all that our City has to offer, and in the meantime contribute to our economy.’’

Both mayors are hoping to boost tourism in their respective cities.

If the Patriots win, New York will provide:

-- Free flight on the Delta Shuttle to New York

-- A two-night stay at Grand Hyatt New York

-- Four tickets to the Phantom of the Opera, celebrating its 10,000th performance right after the Super Bowl

-- Dinner for four at the Russian Tea Room

-- Lunch or dinner for four at B.Smith’s

-- Four club tickets to the Knicks and Rangers (schedule permitting)

-- Ride with the captain on Statue Cruises to Liberty and Ellis islands with a VIP tour of the Statue of Liberty crown and museum with lunch

-- A VIP tour of the new American wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

-- A tour of the Brooklyn Brewery

If the Giants win, Boston will provide:

-- Free flight on JetBlue to Boston

-- Two nights in a suite at the Ritz Carlton

-- Dinners at Legal Sea Foods Harborside and the Top of the Hub

-- Box seats for a performance at the Citi Performing Arts Center

-- Box seats to either a Bruins or a Celtics game (schedule permitting) at the TD Garden

-- A behind-the-scenes tour of the newly expanded Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

-- A Duck Tour

-- A photo with Mayor Menino

-- VIP tour of the personal diaries of John Adams, which inspired the HBO series, at the Boston Public Library

-- VIP tour of the Samuel Adams Brewery in Jamaica Plain.

Not to be outdone, a pair of much lower-profile politicians announced their own much less elaborate bet today. House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones Jr., a North Reading Republican, sent out a press release this afternoon announcing a bet with his counterpart in the New York State Assembly, Minority Leader Brian Kolb.

Jones is risking cannolis from Mike’s Pastry and clam chowder from Legal Sea Foods against New York cheesecake and wine from the Finger Lakes region.
