A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train shortly after 6 p.m. today at Ruggles Station, transportation officials said.

Steve Kulm, an Amtrak spokesman, said northeast regional train no. 174 was traveling from Richmond, Va., to Boston with 85 passengers when it hit the victim. No passengers or crew members reported injuries, he said.

Andrea Wheeler, a Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad spokeswoman, said in an email that some commuter rail trains were delayed for as long as one hour because of the incident.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said.
