Carly Simon bio called seriously flawed
Carly Simon isn’t the only one upset about Stephen Davis’s soon-to-be-released bio of the singer. Davis’s book, called “More Room in a Broken Heart: The True Adventures of Carly Simon,” is being attacked by other writers and rock journalists who say it’s thinly reported and full of factual errors. Sheila Weller, author of “Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon - And the Journey of a Generation,” posted a note on her Facebook page calling Davis an “unabashed clip-jobber.” She says the book has “no source notes, no bibliography, not one single author/journo acknowledgement.” Then there’s Roger Friedman, editor-in-chief of Showbiz411.com. Friedman claims on his celebrity website that Davis “makes some serious mistakes and I’d say possibly commits plagiarism” by lifting material, without attribution, from previously published work. He goes on to say that Simon did not, as Davis claims, have an affair with Mick Jagger or an abortion after a relationship with Jeremy Irons. And what does Davis have to say in response? “I haven’t read (Friedman’s) insipid twaddle and don’t intend to,” Davis, who lives in Milton, wrote us an email yesterday. “Any accusations of inaccuracy are agenda-driven rubbish and must elicit no further comment. Carly’s father, the founder of Simon & Schuster, understood that in publishing there’s no such thing as bad publicity. Just spell the name right.” Readers can judge for themselves when the book comes out next month.
