The Broadway opening of the ART’s production of “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess” drew a slew of familiar faces the other night. Guests included Harvard’s Drew Faust, Lori Gross, and Henry Louis Gates, and a who’s who of show business: Christine Baranski, Alan Alda, Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Barbara Cook, Tony Kushner, director Spike Lee, Piper Perabo, Stephen Schwartz, Tommy Tune, Bill Irwin, Cheyenne Jackson, Meryl Streep’s daughter Mamie Gummer, Christine Ebersole, Richard Thomas, Gavin Creel, Edie Falco, Jefferson Mays, Lainie Kazan, and Al Sharpton, among others. There was no sign of composer Stephen Sondheim, who had taken issue with ART artistic director Diane Paulus’s plan to re-interpret the Gerhswin classic.
