Obama plans lots of reading
VINEYARD HAVEN – The White House today put to rest much speculation about what books the president purchased yesterday at Bunch of Grapes Bookstore.
President Obama picked up “Rodin’s Debutante” by Ward Just and “The Bayou Trilogy” collection by Daniel Woodrell, along with several books for his daughters to read during their nine-day vacation here.
Yesterday, staff members at the store the president visits nearly every year had refused to say what the first family’s selections were this year.
White House officials said today that the president also brought a few books with him from Washington: “Cutting for Stone” by Abraham Verghese; “To the End of Land” by David Grossman; and “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson.
It’s unclear how much down time he will have to read them. Since arriving Thursday evening, he has spent much of his time out and about, first at the bookstore with his daughters and then golfing with friends and taking his wife out to dinner last night.
For most of today, he did not venture out of Blue Heron Farm, the 28-acre estate where he and his family are vacationing for the third straight summer. But tonight he attended a social event at the Oak Bluffs home of Harvard Law Professor Charles Ogletree.
His schedule has also included briefings from top economic and counter-terrorism advisors.
His daughters, 13-year-old Malia and 10-year-old Sasha, reportedly went this afternoon to the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society Fair.
