WINES OF THE MONTH: JULY 2008
Greg Norman
Greg Norman was first introduced to wine and the appreciation of a good bottle of wine back in the 70s when he started playing professional golf in Europe. Greg would frequently enjoy a bottle of wine with dinner and since he was playing a great deal of golf in France at the time, he favored French wine. While in Australia, he did try many Aussie wines, but they were not nearly as popular as they are today. He drank Californian wine very infrequently, as he was not a regular in the States. Now, however, it seems all Greg drinks are varietals from Australia or California, as he tends to enjoy their qualities better than wines from other countries. "Fine wine is one of my great passions, and Australian wine in particular. This passion and curiosity led me to launch Greg Norman Estates, a collection of wines from my native Australia. From the beginning, I have been committed to the promise that every bottle of my wine delivers exceptional quality and value. And gratefully, the wine press agrees. My wines have consistently been awarded high ratings and critical acclaim." Sparkling Chardonnay/Pinot Noir
The wine is a pale straw green in color and it has a very fine, yet persistent bead. On the nose, there are lifted strawberry, citrus, and nutty aromas with just a hint of sherbet character. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied style with generous stone fruit and citrus flavors and a very smooth yet generous finish. Shiraz
Greg Norman Estates Limestone Coast Shiraz is deep, dark red with purple hues. Intense, lifted aromas of ripe, dark plum, blackberry, sweet vanillin, and spice with light, subtle hints of blueberry and blackcurrant fruit, all portend to a generous palate that is full flavored, balanced, and long. The palate, though big and opulent, has an elegant, smooth texture, some mocha and cedar oak character combined with ripe, dark berry fruit and fine tannins. The mid palate's ripe berry flavors will, with time, reveal more complex characters such as dark chocolate, liquorice, wood smoke, and warm leather as the wine ages and evolves. Water Wheel
Water Wheel Vineyards is the brainchild of Peter Cumming, whose family has long been established as successful growers of tomatoes and cherries at Bridgewater-on-Loddon to the north-west of Bendigo in central Victoria. Peter studied winemaking at Roseworthy and, after a few excellent years as winemaker for Hickinbotham at the old Anakie vineyard near Geelong, threw himself boots and all into the Water Wheel business. His driving ambition as a relatively inexperienced winemaker was to capture as much flavor on the palate of his wines as he possibly could, precisely the edge that Water Wheel still retains over so many of its competitors. Today, Water Wheel is regarded as one of Australia's best value mid-sized producers. These wines capture the richness of wines twice the price, without compromising structure and balance. Memsie Red
Memsie red has a dark cherry / purple colour. There are obvious blackcurrant, plum, and spice characters dominating the nose. The palate is fresh with voluminous and forward spice, berry, and plum flavours obvious. These flavours are complimented by hints of sweet oak. The wine has great length with a persistent, smooth, and clean finish. Memsie White
Crystal clear in appearance and pale green straw in color. There are hints of pear and stone fruits on the nose which also are also present on the palate. The palate is complex and full with a lush, viscous mouth feel. The finish is clean and lingering. The Memsie white is ready for immediate consumption. It can be served as an aperitif or with a wide range of white meats and seafood. Wakefield
The Promised Land range of wines owes its name and symbolism from the discovery of fossilized seahorses on the Taylor family estate in the Clare Valley, South Australia. During excavation of the vineyard dam, the remains of three tiny seahorses were uncovered -- fossilized in limestone bedrock. This was confirmation that the area was once the bed of an ancient inland sea and testimony that the rich, terra rossa soils were indeed fertile. The Taylor family agreed that this was a truly promising omen and later named the new area the "Promised Land". The contemporary Promised Land range of wines are crafted from quality fruit sourced from the renowned Clare Valley and Limestone Coast regions of Australia. Designed to be stylish, fun, and always great value these wines will suit any occasion. Promised Land Riesling
Lifted lemon, lime, and orange blossom nose. Delicate perfume characters underlie the obvious citrus characters. Luscious ripe, fresh citrus flavors dominate the palate. The mid palate is soft and round but the wine has a crisp refreshing finish. The acid is lively but balanced with sweet citrus fruit characters. Promised Land Shiraz/Cabernet
Complex aromas of plums, black berries, cassis, licorice, and assorted spice. Underlying glimpses of smoky bacon, vanilla, and tobacco are also evident. Flavours of spice, plums, and vanilla carry over from the bouquet. A generous wine with great acid balance, well integrated oak, and silky smooth tannins which form a well structured wine with a soft persistent finish. |

WINES OF THE MONTH: MAY 2008
Arancio
Celebrated for its hot sunny climate, historic monuments and rich culinary tradition, Sicily has been producing rich flavoured and full-bodied wines since Greek and Roman times. Well known for its warm Mediterranean climate, hot sun, intense light, and fertile soil, Sicily has blossomed into one of the world's most promising wine regions. Arancio cultivates its own grapes in two large estates along the windy south coast of the island. A total of 1,500 acres of estate vineyards are planted in single varietal fields in order to offer 100% single varietal wines to the final consumer. Arancio's new state-of-the-art facilities are utilized to take full advantage of what this bountiful land has to offer. Arancio wines are well recived by all major international magazines, year after year. Grillo

An elegant wine that embodies the intensity of Sicily. A vibrant bouquet of blackberries and strawberries with hints of wood and black and white pepper. Mature and full-bodied with aromatic elegance and a hint of spice. Balance of aromas and fruitness makes it distinct. Pairs well with roasts, red meats and pastas with meat sauces. Kenwood
At Kenwood, grapes from Sonoma County's finest vineyards get the attention they deserve. The harvest from each vineyard is handled separately within the winery to preserve its individuality. This small lot winemaking allows our winemaker, Pat Henderson, to bring each lot of wine to its fullest potential. In the California tradition, Kenwood Vineyards produces a full line of premium quality varietal wines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Merlot. Sauvignon Blanc
For more than twenty-five years Kenwood Vineyards has been recognized as one of California's top Sauvignon Blanc producers. It is their most popular wine. The fruit sourced for this wine comes from growers in five different appellations in Sonoma County. The cooler regions of Carneros and the Russian River Valley bring grassy characteristics to the wine, while grapes from the warmer Dry Creek, Sonoma Valley and Alexander Valley regions create melony, fruity flavors. The result can be found in this well-balanced, award-winning wine. Cabernet Sauvignon
Kenwood Vineyard's Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is made predominantly of fruit sourced from Estate ranches in Sonoma Valley. Each vineyard lot is kept separate throughout fermentation and aging to preserve the unique flavors of the individual vineyards that create this consistent, award-winning wine. After fermenting the grapes in stainless steel tanks, the wine is aged in French and American oak barrels for 24 months. Before bottling, Merlot and Cabernet Franc is added to the final blend. The result is a rich, complex, and fruity wine that has flavor reminiscent of raspberry truffles. Enjoyable now, the wine in this bottle will continue to improve with age. Renwood
Surrounded by some of America's oldest Zinfandel vineyards, Renwood Winery is located in the picturesque California foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Renwood produces world-class award winning wines from Amador County and the Sierra Foothills. Boston native Robert Smerling founded Renwood in 1993. Mr. Smerling fell in love with Amador County's rich history and magnificent vineyards. A plan was set in place to build one of America's premier Zinfandel wineries. Mr. Smerling brought together a group of professional investors who helped him found the company. Wine production has grown from 2,500 cases in 1993 to over 100,000 cases today. The critics all agree Renwood produces consistently exceptional wines covering the spectrum from big, bold, jammy Zins to wonderfully balanced Syrahs and Barberas. Today they produce over 18 different wines, including 2 Proprietary wines, 3 Vineyard Designated wines, 6 Amador County wines, 4 Red Label wines and 3 Dessert wines. 'Red Label' Viognier
The Viognier displays aromas of grapefruit, mineral scents and jasmine. On the palate the wine is crisp, with a medium texture and flavors of melon, lemon zest, and apricots. A steely finish makes this wine very food friendly and the lingering tartness helps balance the wine. While primarily from the Lodi Appellation and the Mohr-Fry Ranch, a small amount of Sierra Foothill grapes were included in the final blend. It has an attractive pale green color and is great with food on its own. 'Red Label' Zinfandel
The Sierra Foothills 'Red Label' Zinfandel displays aromas of cherry, plums and nutmeg. The flavors mirror the aromas and give the wine a fresh fruit flavor with a spicy aftertaste. This lighter style of Sierra Foothills Zinfandel is smooth and luscious. |

WINES OF THE MONTH: APRIL 2008
Casillero del Diablo
Casillero del Diablo offers wine lovers the very special opportunity to participate in the propagation of a century old legend known throughout the world. In the 19th century, the founder of Concha y Toro, Don Melchor, discovered that his vineyard workers were sampling his greatest wines. To discourage this action, Don Melchor spread the rumor that his deepest, darkest cellar was the Casillero del Diablo (Cellar of the Devil), so that no one would dare go in there. It worked, and a legend was born. Today, this mysterious and legendary cellar continues to hold the finest, estate grown wines of Casillero del Diablo. Sauvignon Blanc
Straw with green hues. Fresh and citric. Flavors of peaches with hints of gooseberry. Gentle, round, and mouthfilling with crisp acidity. Carmenere
Dark and deep crimson red. Luscious fruit flavors: Notes of dark plums, chocolate, and spice, generously framed by toasty American oak with a soft and well structured mouthfilling texture. Big House Wine Company
The Big House were born of the subversive notion that the California climate is more hospitable to the rollicking, sun loving grapes of Mediterranean France, Italy, and Spain than some other varieties that we might name (Chardonnay, Merlot). We have found that by blending, rather than relying on a single variety, we can create a far more complax, rich wine that elegantly matches a wine variety of cuisine, from a large stack of pizzas, to BBQ ribs to roast chicken. Our Soledad Winery in Monterey County is a mere ankle iron's toss from the Soledad State Correctional Facility, aka The Big House. Big House Red
Lush tannins, bright fruit, and criminally rich – a riot of blackberry, raspberry, and black pepper. Big House White
Crisp, fragrant and persistent – a riot of citrus, flowers, and peach. Shinas Estate
Shinas Estate is situated in the northwest region of Victoria, Australia. This region is known for its Mediterranean-like climate, classic wines, and great food. The first vines were planted in the region in 1886 and by 1898 vine planting commenced on the estate. With eight generations of grape gowing and wine producing experience, as well as George Shinas' passion for perfection, he draws on time honored traditions to produce premium hand crafted wine. Currently there are two wines in the Shinas Estate portfolio, the Guilty Shiraz and the Innocent Viognier. The names for the wines come from owner George Shinas's career as a judge in his hometown of Mildura. The Guilty Shiraz
Deep dark purple shiraz. Soft and lush with a palate of cracked pepper and blackberrys. Long lingering finish acentuated by some spicey notes. The Innocent Viognier

WINES OF THE MONTH: JANUARY 2008
Wolf Blass
'Black Label' Cabernet/Shibaz
Wolf Blass wines was established in 1966, but it was not until the 1973 vintage that we made our first Black Label, a red wine that was to become our flagship. The principal behind Black Label is simple. Each year it must represent the finest blend we can make from the best grapes we can source - each vintage the varietal and regional make up may alter slightly but the philosophy behind the wine never changes. Since the first vintage in 1973, Black Label has firmly established itself as one of Australia's greatest wines. The Wolf Blass Black Label is deep, purple red in colour. The nose shows intense, lifted blackcurrant fruit, layered with underlying notes of coffee, dark chocolate, and hints of mint. The wines were then pressed off skins and matured in a mix of oak barrels and stainless steel, judged to best suit each parcel. Blending occurred prior to bottling. The Wolf Blass Yellow Label Shiraz is deep red with purple hues. The nose shows aromas of sweet raspberries leading to a medium to full bodied palate displaying flavours of plum and spice, interwoven with subtle charry oak. WINES OF THE MONTH: DECEMBER 2007
Taittinger
Domaine Carneros Brut
The Domaine Carneros estate of 217 acres is situated in the heart of the Carneros, the southern portion of both Napa and Sonoma counties. The Carneros is the first American viticultural zone to be defined according to microclimate rather than along political lines. It is characterized by a long, cool growing season tempered by the maritime breezes and persistent fogs of the San Pablo Bay just to its south. This environment, with temperatures slightly cooler than Burgundy yet slightly warmer than Champagne, provides the optimum conditions for slow, even ripening, perfect acidic balance and harmonious evolution of the organic elements in the fruit. This superb, handcrafted sparkling wine, immediately reminiscent of the Taittinger style, is marked by an exceptional refinement and finesse. Its brilliant straw gold color is punctuated by strands of persistent, pinpoint bubbles. The subtle, ripe fruit richness of the Pinot Noir is balanced by the elegant depth and structure of the Chardonnay, converging in notes of toast and vanilla which linger in the extended finish. Brut La Francaise
Taittinger Brut La Française is produced from select Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes grown in the finest microclimates of the viticultural area of Champagne. Taittinger's extensive vineyard holdings of 600 acres in these areas, particularly in those where Chardonnay is planted, allow it to rely primarily on its own grapes for the vinification of its portfolio of champagnes. The subtle, pale gold color of Taittinger Brut La Française is punctuated by extremely fine, persistent bubbles rising to the surface in fragile strands. The fragrant berry and white fruit aromas, underscored by toasty, yeasty notes are confirmed on the ample, elegant palate which is strongly marked by refined Chardonnay fruit flavors. A fresh, balanced acidity sustains the whole, and carries into a long, crisp toasty finish of great delicacy. Rotari

Korbel Natural' is a very dry, delicate champagne which exemplifies the fruit forward, Korbel "House Style." Sonoma County Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, primarily from the cool Russian River Valley, gives the Korbel Natural' its unique crisp, fruit centered style. Natural' was originally developed by Adolph Heck in the early 1960s as a dry, sophisticated alternative to the sweet and awkward bulk processed sparkling wines commonly consumed at that time. This Sparkling wine produced by Greg Norman Estates has a pale straw green color with a fine yet persistent bead of bobble. On the nose there are lifted strawberry, citrus and nutty aromas with a hint of sherbet character. It is a medium- to full-bodied style with generous stone fruit and citrus flavors, with a very smooth yet generous finish. Compare this to French Champagnes costing three times as much and you won't be disappointed. Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County

"Where are all the juicy, delicious wines that we can drink everyday?" We heard this from our friends all the time, in fact, we were guilty of saying it ourselves! So, we set out to create wines that are as comfortable to enjoy while watching the sunset as they are while celebrating the milestones of our lives." –Rob Mondavi & Paul Hoffman, Winemakers Petite Sirah
Petite Sirah has been a favorite of ours for a long time. Once one of the most widely planted grapes in California, Petite Sirah is known for deep color, luscious mouthfeel and wild berry fragrance. Our 2003 definitely exemplifies the irresistible characteristics that are Petite Sirah. The purple color catches you immediately and your eyes begin to taste. Aromas of violets and roses jump out of the glass. Flavors of fresh berries along with mocha and coffee dance on your palate. A broad structure with integrated, delicate tannins, create a great mouthfeel and an unmistakable desire for the next sip. Chardonnay
Our 2003 Spellbound Chardonnay screams of bright tropical fruit. Intense liveliness comes from the great acidity making each sip a vibrant pleasure. French Oak aging allows the wine to obtain a round and luscious mouth feel while not overpowering the brightness. Look for lemon, lime, apricot and pineapple flavors dancing all over your palate. St. Francis
St. Francis Vineyards & Winery was formally established in 1979, but its history begins in 1971, when Joseph Martin purchased a 100-acre property in the tiny Sonoma Valley community of Kenwood. The original intent behind the purchase was to produce wine grapes rather than wines, a project which at first glance might have seemed an unlikely undertaking for Joe Martin. In early 1995, St. Francis concluded a vineyard contract for management and production of the 170-acre Berger property, also known as the Wild Oak vineyard. Situated a half mile to the northwest of the St. Francis estate in the Valley of the Moon, it is one of the last remaining vineyard properties of this size and quality in Sonoma. The 147 acres of vines, which lie flanked by mountains to the east and west, are planted principally in Merlot with smaller plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. This vineyard contributes to the blends of St. Francis' Sonoma County Chardonnay and Sonoma Valley Merlot. RED
RED is a unique blend of Sonoma red varietals from St. Francis Winery & Vineyards (60% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon , 7% Cabernet Franc , 4% Zinfandel) . A stylish high quality wine you don't have to spit, study or describe that blends superior Sonoma fruit, high-quality winemaking and a palatable price in a sophisticated wine that is easy to like and easy to buy. Red, ripe and robust fruit flavors with spicy aromas make this a wine that pairs well with a variety of foods. Great with grilled foods and pizza or pasta dishes with red sauce. The perfect wine to serve at a cocktail party or backyard barbecue. |

WINES OF THE MONTH: SEPTEMBER 2007
Kiwi Cuvee
Sauvignon Blanc, Vin de Pays Jardin de la France
Why not enjoy the best of both worlds? This Sauvignon Blanc is produced in France and modeled after a cross between a French Sancerre and a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. This wine is 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown on France’s chalky soils and fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain their freshness and acidity. Kiwi Cuvee has gooseberry and grassy aromas with flavors of Kiwi fruit and apple that weave into a long, soft finish. At less than $10 a bottle this wine is a steal. Kenwood
Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County
For more than two decades Kenwood Vineyards has been recognized as one of California’s top Sauvignon Blanc producers. It is their most popular wine. The fruit sourced for this wine comes from growers in five different appellations in Sonoma County. Grapes from vineyards in the cooler regions of Carneros and the Russian River Valley bring grassy characteristics to the wine, while grapes from the warmer Dry Creek, Sonoma Valley and Alexander Valley regions create melony, fruity flavors. The end result can be found in this well-balanced, award-winning wine. The Sauvignon Blanc fruit was harvested in September. The vintage was characterized by a long, somewhat cool growing season which gave the resulting wine excellent structure and a crisp finish. The lots were fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to retain the natural fruity flavors of the Sauvignon Blanc grape. A small portion was aged in 2000 Gallon French oak tanks to mellow the wine without adding oak character. Winemaker Pat Henderson held the fruit from each vineyard lot separate throughout fermentation and aging, blending just prior to bottling for optimum flavors. Merlot, Sonoma County
Kenwood Vineyards creates its award-winning Sonoma County Merlot from vineyards located in the Sonoma, Dry Creekand Alexander Valleys. Grapes harvested in the cooler Sonoma Valley region are deep in color with intense berry flavors. Our Winemaker balances the blend with fruit from the warmer Dry Creek and Alexander Valley regions that grow fruitier grapes. The resulting wine is ripe, supple and well-proportioned. Following a growing season with mild weather the Merlot crop was harvested in September and October. Each vineyard lot was fermented separately in stainless steel tanks and aged individually in a combination of American and French oak barrels for 21 months. After aging, the wines were removed from barrels and blended for taste and balance just prior to bottling. A touch of Cabernet Sauvignon was blended into the final wine for added zest. Pinot Evil
Pinot Noir, Vin de Pays
This Pinot Noir comes from the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France. This is an area on France’s western Mediterranean coast that is home to over 70,000 acres of grape vines. Many consider this to be one of the largest wine producing areas in the world and it accounts for upwards of one-third of all wine produced in France. Since the 1990’s, the quality of wines from the Languedoc has greatly improved and today it produces some of France’s best-valued wines. Pinot Evil is a Vin de Pays wine because it is labeled by its varietal (Pinot Noir) rather than its region. This wine is a terrific value as it displays enticing aromas of cherries and strawberries with a subtle, smooth finish. Fans of Beaujolais will certainly enjoy this Pinot Noir. Packaged in a 750ml bottle as well as a 3ltr box, Pinto Evil is right for any occasion, like a dinner party or your very own house wine. |
