Funniest award show quote: Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais hosted the 2012 Golden Globe Awards and had us in stitches at several points during the show. One of the most hilarious moments came when he asked Hollywood heartthrob Johnny Depp about his movie “The Tourist,” which The Boston Globe gave two stars when it came out in 2010. The film, which boasted a blockbuster cast (including Angelina Jolie as Depp’s costar) and budget ($100 million, according to IMDB), tanked at the box office, so we weren’t surprised that Gervais picked at it when introducing Depp as a presenter.
Depp went along with Gervais’s joke and smiled as he answered an awkward question. He even later appeared on the British comedian’s sitcom, “Life’s Too Short,” and staged a rant in response to the onstage jab.
The interaction went as follows:
“First of all, I wanna ask you a question. It’s real … and be honest: Are you on recreational drugs? I’m joking. Have you… Ready? Have you seen ‘The Tourist’ yet?”
“Um, no,” Depp replied, smirking, after a sizable pause. Depp pretended to chase Gervais before returning to the microphone, saying, “He’s fun.”
What do you think? Funny, no?

’The Tourist’ took in an underwhelming $16,472,458 in its first weekend. In comparison, 2012’s “Skyfall” got an identical 2-star rating and was also an action-packed thriller, but operated on a $200 million budget and took in $88,364,714 in its opening weekend.
