First ladies

We've heard plenty about the founding fathers from popular historians like Joseph J. Ellis and David McCullough, but what about our founding mothers? Veteran journalist Cokie Roberts gives these women equal time in her new book, "Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation." She'll read from the book, which includes profiles of historical figures such as Lewis and Clark guide Sacajawea and first lady Dolley Madison, tonight at Brookline Booksmith. References to "ladies night" probably won't be appreciated. 6 p.m. Free. Brookline Booksmith, 279 Harvard St., Brookline. 617-566-6660. brooklinebooksmith.com
