US schools also employed salute
In reference to your review of "The Hitler Salute: On the Meaning of a Gesture" (Sunday Books, June 15), I wonder how many people realize that, until World War II, I recall every day saluting the American flag just like the Germans did in our grammar school, arms straight out, slightly elevated.
This was a custom in America's schools.
