The 1 thing you must do, see or hear this week

THE 1 RHYMING SPORTS REPORT
Some sports fans watch NESN or (hopefully) read the Globe for a fix. Others prefer a rundown from local rapper Akrobatik, who humorously rhymes the previous day's highlights during his weekday "Sports Rap-Up" at 7, 8, and 9 a.m. on JAM'N 94.5. Consider this snippet from his rant after last month's Red Sox loss to Toronto: "15-4, they got pounded/The Sox were astounded/They chased Josh Beckett off the mound, kid." With Tom Brady out for the season, Ak should have plenty of morning material. How many words rhyme with Cassel? - MEREDITH GOLDSTEIN
THE 1 ROCKING CAREER TRANSITION
With the single flick of a deadly silver finger in the second season premiere of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," Shirley Manson livened up Fox's sometimes murky TV reboot of the big-screen franchise. The former Garbage frontwoman - she of the flaming red tresses and icy cool good looks - plays nefarious corporate dominatrix Catherine Weaver. With her Scottish burr and shape-shifting abilities, she's got me rooting for the robots to rise and kick John Connor's whiny teen butt. - SARAH RODMAN
THE 1 GREAT ELECTION-SEASON LYRIC
We could go on and on about Randy Newman's rapier wit, but his words speak for themselves. This is a verse from "A Piece of the Pie," a track from "Harps and Angels," Newman's savagely patriotic new album. It stinks here high and low/ The rich are getting richer/ I should know/ While we're going up/ You're going down/ And no one gives a [expletive] but Jackson Browne. To hear this and other timely tunes go to www.randynewman.com - JOAN ANDERMAN
THE 1 REQUIEM FOR A VIDEO STORE
A few years back, Brookline's Cinemasmith - one of the area's most enlightened video shops - was unceremoniously relocated to the Coolidge Corner basement of its owner, Brookline Booksmith. Now comes word that the shop is closing altogether and having a grand sell-off of its DVDs and VHS tapes (remember them?), with the doors set to shutter when the last movie's gone. No more out-of-print obscurities to delight and boggle the senses. Make a point this week to pay your respects, and maybe grab a copy of Rivette's "Celine and Julie Go Boating" while you're at it. - TY BURR
THE 1 "DAILY SHOW" CRUSH
From the first moment I saw Kristen Schaal as Mel, the band's biggest - and only - fan on "Flight of the Conchords," it has been true love. Schaal absolutely owns the corner of Derangement Boulevard and Irony Avenue. So when she started showing up as a contributor on "The Daily Show" this spring, I found myself in an entertainment perfect storm. She's a great addition to Jon Stewart's stable, and I always want more of her segments. Also, check out Schaal's work on Mel's Video Blog at hbo.com. It's sicktastic. - MATTHEW GILBERT
THE 1 AUDIOBOOK TOUR-DE-FORCE
John le Carre routinely creates magic. But in the new abridged audio version of 2006's "Mission Song" (Hachette Audio, $14.98), his sorcery is magnified by the performance of David Oyelowo. A British actor of Nigerian descent, Oyelowo transmits the jaw-dropping intelligence and pathos of the language in more than a dozen voices, from plummy peer of the realm to East Congolese warlord. Add to this the suspense of the plot, about an interpreter for British intelligence who hears something he shouldn't, and the effect is spellbinding. - DEBORAH P. JACOBS![]()
