THE 1 BEST PAIR OF $16 SPECS
Prescription glasses that cost less than the new AC/DC album? Zenni Optical (http://zennioptical.com) has a range of specs, from the $8 stainless steel rims to $15.95 for something with a flourish. I bought three pairs, a cheapie to back up my Ray Bans, purple-tinted Lennon specs, and a red pair with a flowered pattern that several discriminating mothers at school drop-off told me were "girly." I don't care. For $16, that's a stylistic risk I'm willing to take. - GEOFF EDGERS
THE 1 S.O.B. YOU WANT ON OUR SIDE
Ridley Scott's "Body of Lies" is just a genre thriller and not a bad one, especially whenever British actor Mark Strong (left) is onscreen as Hani, head of Jordan's secret police. A blue-eyed master manipulator with a Saville Row wardrobe and a heart of ice, Hani leads Leonardo DiCaprio around by the nose, always one step ahead of the plot and the audience. He could be a fully enabled Claude Rains from "Casablanca," or one of those shadowy know-it-alls, gentle of voice and ruthless of deed, in a Graham Greene novel. - TY BURR
THE 1 WIRELESS MUSIC SYSTEM
I was spoiled. When I wanted to hear music from one room to the next, I turned up the volume. Simple. But my recent move to a condominium with neighbors in close proximity makes my house-wide, late night Lady GaGa jam sessions a thing of the past. To keep the peace, I invested in Eos's Wireless iPod base and speakers. I put my iPod in the base, plug in the wireless speakers, and can listen to music anywhere in the condo. It's easy enough that my grandmother could set it up - that is if my grandmother owned an iPod. - CHRISTOPHER MUTHER
THE 1 CAPTURER OF WEST COAST COOL
Chet Baker dreaming (left) . . . Miles Davis frowning . . . Steve McQueen driving . . . Ornette Coleman staring: all of them captured by William Claxton photographing. Claxton, who died nine days ago at 80, was one of the great jazz photographers. Los Angeles-based, he took his share of movie-star portraits, too. And since his wife was Peggy Moffitt, designer Rudi Gernreich's favorite model, Claxton took some of the most memorable fashion pictures of the '60s. What drew him was stylishness: aural, visual, sartorial - the works. - MARK FEENEY
>THE 1 AFTER-HOURS DIGITAL SAFETY NET
Are you the type to tickle the (computer) keys when you've had too many gin and tonics? Do you blast grammatically challenged e-mail sonnets to exes after the cab drops you home? Gmail's got your back. Google's geniuses created "Mail Goggles" to prevent these mishaps. Schedule "Goggles" for the times you need them the most. (Perhaps 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturdays?) When it is enabled, try to send your e-mail. A box will pop up with several easy math problems. Can't figure 'em out? Denied. Take two aspirins and try again in the morning. - COURTNEY HOLLANDS
THE 1 BLOG ABOUT ALT-CULTURE (NOT)
Hipster Runoff is a side-splitting blog that spoofs alt-attitude, alt-fashion, and alt-lifestyle. Among the site's spot-on sendups: alt-syntax and alt-spelling, the obsession with crafting, and nonstop commentary about Justice and Girl Talk. Go to www.hipsterrun off.com and you may even get the answer to this pressing question: "Are stepdad jeans the future?" - JOAN ANDERMAN![]()
