Politics, religion, labor, and nationalism are explored in "The Irish Americans: A History" by Jay P. Dolan. The professor emeritus of history at the University of Notre Dame covers more than 200 years, starting with the immigrants' arrival in 1729 after the poor harvest and decline of the linen trade, and ending with Hollywood's celebration of Catholic culture and Irish economic success. Dolan will discuss and read from his new book, and participate in a Q&A. 7 p.m. Free ($30 for book). Harvard Book Store, 1256 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge. 617-661-1515. www.harvard.com/events
