With November being the final issue for Gourmet magazine, National Geographic fills the gap with the sumptuously illustrated “Food Journeys of a Lifetime: 500 Extraordinary Places to Eat Around the Globe.’’ This hefty volume offers advice on finding the best baguette in Paris and roast duck in China, the hottest chili in Mexico, the sweetest treats in Istanbul, and so on. Scattered throughout are top 10 lists - of food museums, national dishes, and exotic restaurants, for starters. There’s even a nod to colonialism, which means you can find German fare in Namibia, Italian culinary influences in Libya, and Welsh tea cakes in Patagonia.
