Cushing Academy, a boarding school in Massachusetts, is getting rid of most of the 20,000 books in its library and going digital. Oh what fun they could have on the way to the trash bin. Bruce McCall, whose satire in The New Yorker is always entertaining, has outdone himself with “50 Things to Do with a Book (Now That Reading is Dead)’’ (HarperCollins). He illustrates each of his ideas with whimsical drawings of books as substitute sandbags during floods, targets for skeet shooting practice, and building blocks for Bookhenge.
