So it’s not a cruise ship to the tropics. The Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands Seafarers’ Island Holiday is still a getaway. Author Stephanie Schorow will be along on the excursion to nearby Spectacle Island to discuss history of the harbor and sign copies of her book “East of Boston: Notes From the Harbor Islands.’’ Wear warm clothing and your hiking boots to explore more than 4 miles of footpaths and 360-degree views. Jan. 2. 11 a.m. departure, 3 p.m. return. $25, $22 seniors, $20 ages 3-12 and students. Boat leaves from Fox Point Pavilion, University of Massachusetts, South Boston. 781-740-4290, www.fbhi.org
