Capturing the beauty of the Arctic wilds

Landscape photographer Jeff Jones has roamed the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge — a roadless, trail-free expanse about the size of South Carolina — by bush plane, snowmobile, river raft, and on foot. Fewer than 1,200 people a year visit this land of extremes that is home to North America’s last large-scale migration of caribou. In “Arctic Sanctuary’’ (University of Alaska) Jones captures the brilliant reds of the tundra in autumn, the sculptural waves of snow shaped by frigid winds, and the golden sunlight that illuminates mountaintops and valleys.
