“The Tao of Travel’’ (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) by Paul Theroux, a granddaddy of contemporary travel writers, is most valuable for the directions in which it leads readers. In this new compendium of travel advice and lore, Theroux quotes from some of his own books. Since I am already a fan of his, what I most appreciated were his recommendations of works by other writers, especially lesser-known female wanderers such as Freya Stark, who explored Iran and other parts of the Middle East in the 1930s, and Dervla Murphy, who rode a bicycle from Ireland to India in 1963.
