Reading books about Walmart is a whiplash experience. It’s had plenty of bad press so you are inclined to hate it. Then you learn it’s the world’s biggest seller of organic milk and cotton. Now you are ready to admire it, until you discover it pays so poorly that many employees qualify for welfare. The chain inspires such strong feelings that several New England communities have fought store openings - recently Mayor Thomas M. Menino opposed plans to seek a location in Roxbury.
