The polio years
Author Susan Richards Shreve, who's written more two dozen novels and children's books, plumbs her own life in the new memoir "Warm Springs" (Houghton Mifflin, $24). The book recalls the two years she spent as a polio patient at Warms Springs, the care facility created by Franklin Roosevelt to help sick children, in an age when that disease was a particular scourge of the young.
Despite the subject, this is no depressing book. Instead, it's a tale of a young girl's adventures and discoveries, subtly written. I interviewed Shreve on NECN today. Here's the link if you'd like to hear her. Click on the "Features" bar.
