A beautiful and quirky book has popped up out of San Francisco. "All Over Coffee'' is a collection of enigmatic "comic strips'' written and illustrated by Paul Madonna.

Madonna renders richly detailed sketches of streetscapes and coffee shops in San Francisco. He draws on location. Then he makes up conversations that might have taken place over coffee.

You really need to see how the words and pictures work together to experience Madonna's work. but here's a sample "exchange" from the book:

"Why won't you discuss politics or religion with me?"

"Because I can't have a conversation with a closed-minded person.''

"I'm not closed-minded. I'm right."
