I wish I was going to be out in western Mass. tomorrow. I just heard about a poet who hosts a reading of Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass'' on July 4th every year. Whitman self-published the book on July 4, 1855.

Poet Jan Freeman learned that fact in 1993 while researching Whitman's life for a textbook she was working on. She started the readings that year. Beginning at 10 a.m. people gather at her home in Ashfield and they read aloud Whitman's poems, including the transcendent "Song of Myself.''
