"Examination of a Witch," by Thompkins Matteson, 1853

Brunonia Barry's contemporary novel of Salem, "The Lace Reader," which I wrote about in today's Globe, may be getting most of the attention in that seaside city at the moment.

But there's at least one other upcoming novel, and surely not the last, with a Salem setting: Kathleen Kent's "The Heretic's Daughter," based on the historical character of Martha Carrier, one of the victims of the 1692 witchcraft hysteria. Kent, who lives in Dallas, is a descendent of Carrier. The book is due out in September from Little, Brown.
