Five young writers

Posted by David Mehegan September 24, 2008 11:08 AM

Among the National Book Award activities in November, sponsored by the National Book Foundation, is the touting of "5 under 35": five fiction writers under age 35. The five writers, just announced, were each selected by a National Book Award winner or finalist from a past year. Three of the five, noted foundation director Harold Augenbraum, were born outside the United States.

The five, with most recent works, and the selectors:

Matthew Eck, "The Farther Shore," Joshua Ferris.
Keith Gessen, "All the Sad Young Literary Men," Jonathan Franzen.
Sana Krasikov, "One More Year: Stories," Francine Prose.
Nam Le, "The Boat," Mary Gaitskill.
Fiona Maazel, "Last Last Chance," by Jim Shepard.
