Today marks the 50th anniversary of "The Elements of Style,'' perhaps the best-known guide to clear and concise writing in the English language.
E.B. White, the author of "Charlotte's Web'' and "Stuart Little,'' rediscovered a brief guide to style by William Strunk, his professor at Cornell, wrote an essay about it for The New Yorker in 1957, and later revised it, publishing it as "The Elements of Style'' in 1959.
NPR has an interesting little story on the history of the enterprise.
