With the start of a new year, many of us are turning our attention to self improvement. Karen Armstrong, the former nun who has written books on many of the world's great religions, has, in her latest, "Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life,'' turned her attention to practical ways we can all help make our own communities and the world a better place. Armstrong will discuss her book Thursday at 7:30 p.m., at Temple Kehilath Israel, 384 Harvard St., Brookline. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased either at Brookline Booksmith or by calling 617-566-6660.
