Think "Gone with the Wind'' in the Caribbean. In Esmerelda Santiago's historical novel “Conquistadora,” Ana Cubillas ends up a widow running a sugar plantation. With smarts, courage, and saavy, Ana manages to deal with hurricanes, slave revolts, cholera, and romantic entanglements in 19th century Puerto Rico. Santiago will read from her book Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Brookline Booksmith.

SUNDAY: Poets Franz Wright (“Walking to Martha’s Vineyard”) and Wesley McNair (“Lovers of the Lost”) read at 4 p.m., at Longfellow House, 105 Brattle St., Cambridge.

WEDNESDAY: Nassir Ghaemi discusses “First-Rate Madness,” at 6 p.m., at the Boston Public Library, Copley Square.

THURSDAY: Lev Grossman reads from “The Magician King,” at 7 p.m., at Brookline Booksmith … David Roberts discusses “Finding Everett Ruess,” at 7 p.m., at Porter Square Books, 25 White St., Cambridge.
