'The Collector'

John Fowles

Creepy Frederick Clegg watches Miranda Grey, stalks her ("Seeing her always made me feel like I was catching a rarity, going up to it very careful, heart-in-mouth as they say"), and captures and imprisons her like one of his butterfly specimens. A master of self-delusion, Frederick's fantasy is that Miranda will fall in love with him once she gets to know him. This novel, told both from the collector's viewpoint and through the pages of Miranda's diary, will make you claustrophobic in the extreme.
