Born on March 18, 1932, in Shillington, Pa., Updike moved to Ipswich in 1957. He remained north of Boston for the rest of his life, moving to Georgetown before settling in Beverly Farms. Updike is seen here playing a recorder at Ipswich's 17th Century Day on Aug. 8, 1972.
