In the world of celebrity news and gossip, there was no shortage of headlines in 2013. Miley goes wild at the VMAs
The most shocking celebrity story to take over the airwaves in 2013 has to be Miley Cyrus’s performance with Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards Aug. 25. The queen of twerking caused a media uproar for grinding on Thicke as well as for her scanty attire. The performance was tweeted about at a record pace of 300,000 tweets per second.
The Amanda Show: courtroom edition
2013 was not a good year for actress Amanda Bynes, who had a number of run-ins with the law. In May, Bynes appeared in court in Manhattan for charges of allegedly possessing marijuana and tossing a bong out of her apartment window. In July, the former child star was placed on a 72-hour mental lockdown after reportedly starting a small fire on a household driveway in Thousand Oaks, Calif. In June, Bynes was placed in a 30-day psychiatric hold before her mother, Lynn Bynes, was granted indefinite legal control over her well-being. This November, Bynes was found mentally competent to stand trial in a DUI case stemming from 2012.
Add in the odd wigs and outlandish Twitter tirades, and it’s clear that 2013 was a pretty tumultuous year for the former Nickelodeon star. Thankfully, Bynes has since enrolled in fashion school and just might be on the path to getting her life back together. Time will tell. Next

The world seemed to come to a stand-still as Britain’s Prince William and his wife, Catherine, prepared for the birth of their first child. The media was abuzz with coverage of the arrival of Prince George, who was born on July 22. Kanye’s questionable moves
While getting engaged to Kim Kardashian and the birth of his daughter, North West, were certainly some positive moments for Kanye West, the recording artist also found questionable ways to keep people talking.
After getting jabbed at by comedian Jimmy Kimmel for his odd interview with BBC’s Zane Lowe, West went on an epic Twitter tirade against the late-night television host. The two would later patch things up on Kimmel’s show, but the interview also produced another awesome rant by the outspoken performer.
Kanye, also known as Yeezus, garnered more buzz when he released his racy video, featuring a topless Kim Kardashian, for “Bound 2.” The video spurred a ton of hilarious online parodies, inlcuding one by actors Seth Rogen and James Franco.
The controversy didn’t stop there as the artist tried to co-opt the Confederate flagin the fall, causing a whole slew of reactions. And let’s not forget the absurd visuals featured on his “Yeezus” tour.

Angelina Jolie’s double mastectomy
Actress Angelina Jolie shocked the world by announcing that she had undergone preventive double mastectomy surgery earlier in 2013. The Hollywood A-lister told the world her story in a May 14 op-ed in The New York Times titled “My Medical Choice.” Jolie made the tough decision after learning she was a carrier of a gene that gave her high odds of eventually getting breast cancer. Fans and fellow celebrities took to social media to praise Jolie for her brave choice and deciding to go public about it. Next
Paula Deen’s scandal
In June, word got out that celebrity chef Paula Deen had admitted to using racial epithets during a videotaped deposition for a lawsuit brought against her by a former employee. The news caused a firestorm in the media and even caused the Food Network not to renew its contract with her. As the controversy continued, both Walmart and Caesars Entertainment Corp. cut ties with the chef.
Despite all the negative attention, Deen would come out on top in the lawsuit, as the judge presiding over the case threw it out in August.

Bad boy Bieber
It was a rough year for teen heartthrob Justin Bieber. The megastar singer was involved in a myriad of incidents throughout 2013, as Bieber seemed to be channeling his inner bad boy.
Highlights of the Canadian performer’s wild antics included posting a picture of his bare bottom on Instagram in January and getting his pet capuchin monkey seized by German customs officials in March. He then riled up fans in April by writing the following quote in the guest book at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam: “Hopefully she would have been a belieber.” Bieber also had a few run-ins with the paparazzi, nearly coming to blows with a photograher outside of his hotel in London March 8 (pictured), according to TMZ.
From reportedlyurinating in a mop bucket to allegedly sleeping with a Brazilian actress and bodybuilder, Biebs just couldn’t stay out of the news. However, with his recent Twitter announcement that he may be stepping away from music after the release of his new album, maybe next year will be a little quieter for Bieber. We shall see. Next

It’s seems like every move Jennifer Lawrence made in 2013 caused a stir with fans and the media. The outspoken “Hunger Games” star was recently named one of People Magazine’s most intriguing of the year, an apropos honor considering how obsessed people seemed to be with her. From her onstage slip while accepting her Oscar for Best Actress at this year’s Academy Awards to her new short haircut, fans and media members just couldn’t get enough of Jennifer Lawrence being, well, Jennifer Lawrence. Beyonce’s big year
2013 was a huge year for Beyonce in a variety of ways. In January, the superstar singer performed at the 57th presidential inauguration for President Obama in Washington, D.C. While the appearance caused a flurry after Beyonce admitted to lip syncing at the event, that incident couldn’t halt her big year.
In February, Mrs. Carter took center stage at the Super Bowl XLVII halftime show, which became the second most tweeted about moment in history, only to be outdone by Miley Cyrus’s 2013 VMA performance. Beyonce’s halftime extravaganza also helped Super Bowl XLVII earn the highest ratings in Super Bowl history.
February also saw Queen Bey take home another Grammy Award, this time for Best Traditional R&B Performance for her song “Love On Top.” Beyonce would ride this wave of momentum into her “The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour,” which kicked off in April.
Beyonce really shocked fans when she unexpectedly released her fifth studio album on Dec. 13, causing a storm of positive reactions on social media. Add in an honorary chair at this year's Met Gala as well as being honored on Time’s list of the 100 most influential people, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a celebrity who had a more stellar 2013. Social media reaction to Miss America 2014 winner
For the first time in the pageant’s history, an Indian American woman took the title of Miss America when Nina Davuluri, of New York, won the 2014 crown Sept. 15 in Atlantic City, N.J. What should have been a celebratory and momentous occasion quickly turned sour when detractors bombarded Twitter and other social media outlets with their critiques of the choice. Remaining a class act, Davuluri brushed off the the negative comments and focused on the positives. “I have to rise above that,” she said in a press conference after the crowning. “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.” Next
Reese Witherspoon’s arrest
2013 saw Elle Woods transform from lovable lawyer to aggressive arrestee when “Legally Blond” star Reese Witherspoon was arrested for disorderly conduct on April 19. The actress, along with her husband, Jim Toth, ( both pictured) were taken into custody after getting into an altercation in Atlanta with a Georgia state trooper. The incident made headlines when a dash cam video of Witherspoon’s arrest was released online, forcing her to make a public apology on “Good Morning America” in May. The Hollywood starlet pleaded no contest and reportedly paid a fine of $213 while Toth, who plead guilty to a DUI charge, received 40 hours of community service and a year of probation. Next
Julianne Hough’s controversial Halloween costume
Actress Julianne Hough caused a stir with her controversial costume at the Casamigos Tequila Halloween party in Hollywood on Oct. 25. The former “Dancing with the Stars” champion made the decision of donning blackface while dressing up as “Orange Is the New Black” character Crazy Eyes. Hough took to Twitter to apologize for the outfit, but that didn’t stop the immense amount of backlash from social media users. Next
