CYCLORAMA A few notables turned out for this weekend's Volvo Hyannis Port Challenge, including David Caruso of "CSI: Miami"; John Ratzenberger of "Cheers"; Pats wideout David Givens, tight end Christian Fauria, and linebacker Ted Johnson; and state Senator Mark Montigny. The ride from the JFK Library to the Kennedy Compound on Cape Cod raised $1.5 million for Best Buddies, an organization founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver that helps people with intellectual disabilities. Afteward, exhausted riders feasted on lobster and grooved to the music of Mary Ramsey (Natalie Merchant's replacement in 10,000 Maniacs) and Ted Mason.
HOUSEHOLD NAMES As dinner parties go, it's a fancy affair. Guests at the Kennedys's annual May Dinner, held last night at the JFK Library, not only eat well, but they're also treated to some fine entertainment. (This year, it was a performance by the lovely Melissa Errico, the Tony Award-nominated soprano who happens to be married to Patrick McEnroe.) The gala was hosted by Caroline Kennedy and hubby Edwin Schlossberg and attended by family patriarch Ted Kennedy and his wife, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, Jean Kennedy Smith, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Honored at last night's event, which was ably co-chaired by
NO LAUGHING MATTER Add Comedy Connection owner Bill Blumenreich's name to the list of people who are hopping mad about road closures during the upcoming Democratic National Convention. Concerned that everyone's going to stay home during the convention, Blumenreich's trying to get out of a $100,000 contract with comedian Jim Breuer (a.k.a. SNL's "Goat Boy"), who's booked at the Faneuil Hall Marketplace club on July 25 and 26.
CROSSOVER ARTIST Eclectic would be one way to describe the artists who pay tribute to Tina Turner on the new CD, "What's Love? A Tribute to Tina Turner." While Kip Winger and Tiffany are odd choices, the most incongruous is figure skater and Stoneham native Nancy Kerrigan, who makes her recording debut on a cover of the Acid Queen's big hit "The Best."
SISTER ACT Tomorrow, Cy Young winner Barry Zito and those pesky Oakland A's come to Fenway. But tonight, it's the southpaw's sister who's starring. The Sally Zito Project, featuring the pitcher's big sister on keys, takes the stage around 9:30 p.m. at Bill's Bar in the shadow of the Green Monster. (Gee, wonder if Sox pitcher/ guitarist Bronson Arroyo might drop by and jam . . . but, no, that'd probably violate MLB's rules against fraternization.) Sally Zito, who attended the Berklee College of Music, is said to be heavily influenced by Ben Folds and Dave Matthews.
SIGHTINGS On TV's "Alias," he's agent Jack Bristow, but dining the other night at Bravo at the MFA he was just actor Victor Garber. . . . Yes, that was former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne digging into a salad at Sonsie (and sipping Chardonnay) before his Berklee show. . . . Following the Sox win Saturday night, clean-shaven center fielder Johnny Damon and Arroyo raced over to catch Robert Schimmel's show at the Comedy Connection.
