The James gang

Next week marks the 50th anniversary of the death of James Dean. He was just 24 when his Porsche Spyder crashed into another car on Sept. 30, 1955. Dean's screen career consisted of three starring roles -- ''East of Eden," ''Rebel Without a Cause," and ''Giant" -- and bit parts in three other pictures (including, of all things, a Martin and Lewis comedy, ''Sailor Beware").

Even so, he remains one of the most indelible presences in Hollywood history, the first movie icon of youth culture. ''Rebel's" title long ago became a catchphrase. The Eagles and Hilary Duff recorded songs about Dean, and his name crops up in songs by R.E.M., David Essex, Madonna, and John Mellencamp. Above all, he has a uniquely enduring status as movie-star measuring stick. Few months go by without some actor being dubbed another Dean. All that's needed, apparently, are youth, sullenness, and good hair. (Acting ability helps, too, but as some of the names below indicate, it's not considered an essential job requirement.)

Typing ''new James Dean" and ''next James Dean" into the Nexis database finds that more than 50 actors have been put forth as Dean's heir -- not to mention an actress, a soccer player, a wrestler, a movie character, a Beach Boy, two tennis players, and two rappers. Don't worry if you can't identify some of the names. Their obscurity simply underscores the fact that, even half a century later, there's still been only one James Dean. -- MARK FEENEY

Willis on hand as Moore, Kutcher wed

Odd couple Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore (inset) were married Saturday, according to Us Weekly and People magazines, which reported the May-December wedding on their respective websites yesterday. Us Weekly reported that the wedding in LA was attended by about 100 of the couple's friends, including Moore's second husband, Bruce Willis, her ''Charlie's Angels" costar Lucy Liu, and Moore's three daughters from her marriage to Willis. Moore began dating Kutcher two years ago. According to People, Kutcher and Moore met at a dinner in New York in 2003. After the couple began dating, the magazine says Kutcher ''quickly carved out a place in the lives of [Moore's] three daughters" -- Rumer, 17; Scout, 14; and Tallulah, 11 -- and they affectionately call him MOD, for ''My Other Dad."

Injured editor sues von Furstenberg

A fashion editor who was knocked unconscious by a bank of lights that fell on her at a Diane von Furstenberg show is suing the designer. At the Sept. 11 show, Karen Hanes Larrain, who works for Cosmopolitan magazine, suffered a concussion and three gashes requiring 30 stitches. Her lawyer, Adam Schlesinger, said the lawsuit seeks unspecified damages to recoup medical bills plus pain and suffering. A spokeswoman for von Furstenberg said the designer offered to pay Larrain's medical bills but had not heard from her.

McCready hospitalized for overdose

Mindy McCready's life continues to unravel as the country singer has been hospitalized after a drug overdose, her second in two months. McCready was admitted to a Nashville hospital after ingesting more than two dozen antidepressants following a fight with the father of her unborn child. McCready was listed in fair condition and is expected to make a full recovery. No immediate word on the condition of the fetus. According to police, the 29-year-old singer and her on-again, off-again boyfriend, William McKnight, had an argument regarding McKnight's financial commitment to McCready and their child. Last week, McCready revealed she tried to commit suicide earlier this summer because she found out she was pregnant.
