Mothersbaugh and the 'Mutants'

Since he couldn't make it to the opening of his art show at the Paradise, we called Mark Mothersbaugh at his LA recording studio. And, as you might expect, the founding member of Devo was an entertaining interview. ''We wear the same yellow suits that used to make us look like cheeseburgers" he said, ''except now we look like double cheeseburgers." Actually, Mothersbaugh's Devo days are mostly behind him. The author of the '80s MTV hit ''Whip It" stays busy these days doing film and TV scores, including all of Wes Anderson's movies. ''I have an open palette now," he said. ''When you're working in pop music, everything moves in baby steps." (His art, which is on display at the Paradise through Nov. 27, is typically weird -- portraits the artist calls ''Beautiful Mutants.") Asked about the upside of rock stardom, Mothersbaugh said, ''It was an exciting time when we were the next big thing, and our guest list was Mick Jagger, Jack Nicholson, and all the young starlets." And the downside? ''Kids were gobbing in those days," he said. ''They'd spit at us and it would hang off our yellow protective suits like stalactites."

Garner, Affleck making room for baby

Sounds like ''Alias" star Jennifer Garner and hubby Ben Affleck are getting the nursery ready. Us Weekly reports that the couple, whose baby is due next week, got a bounty of baby gifts at events in La-La Land. One fete had a ''Violet" theme, a not-so-subtle hint, according to the magazine, that the baby's name will be the lovely shade of light purple. But don't think for a minute that Garner, who's still filming her hit TV show, is planning to quit the biz when she becomes a mom. According to The Hollywood Reporter yesterday, Garner and her Vandalia Films will develop the erotic thriller ''Sabbatical" with Touchstone Pictures. Garner will star in the story about a couple who, after seven years of marriage, take a two-week sabbatical from each other, after which the husband disappears.

Newman’s Own comes to McDonald’s

Nell Newman, cofounder of Newman's Own Organics, was at the McDonald's franchise on Soldiers Field Road yesterday to launch the Newman's Own coffee line at the burger chain. The daughter of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward talked about the Newman's Own Organic Blend coffee that's been created exclusively for the 650 McDonald's restaurants in the region. . . . ''700 Sundays" creator Billy Crystal was a regular at the new KnowFat! Lifestyle Grille in downtown Boston while in town for a 12-show run. And word is he liked the food so much he treated his crew to a catered event after the last show on Saturday night.

Whale nailed

The whale sculpture sponsored by Mohegan Sun that beached itself in front of Ciao Bella is now floundering outside the Boston Center for the Arts. Harpooned by the Back Bay Architectural Commission for not having the right permits, the fiberglass whale decorated by TV personality Dixie Whatley and signed by visiting VIPs, was moved yesterday. The whale will eventually be auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting the BCA. Check out www.thewhaletrail.com.

In the crowd

What is it with John Kerry? First the senator shows up to see Bono and the boys, then he gets a big round of applause as he makes his way to his sweet seats at Sunday's Bruce Springsteen show at the TD Banknorth Garden. . . . At about the same time, ''Contender" runner-up Peter Manfredo Jr., former Bruin Gord Kluzak, and Revolution pretty boy Taylor Twellman were taking their seats at the Pats-Bills game at Gillette Stadium. . . . Former Celts center Robert Parish sauntered into Capital Grille the other night with his iPod earbuds in. . . .

The Dropkick Murphys did a walk-through at the Gahden (they play a gig after tomorrow's Bruins game) and bassist Ken Casey ran into B's defensemen Hal Gill. . . . Randy Farrell-Forstein of Salon Mario Russo rushed to the Garden to tend the tresses of Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, who opened for Gwen Stefani last night. . . .

Paul Pierce and other Celts players paid a visit to a child at Childrens Hospital yesterday.
