(BANG) - Samuel L. Jackson hates fighting.

The 'Snakes on a Plane' star - who shot to fame playing a hit-man in 'Pulp Fiction'- says despite being a hard man on screen, he's a pussycat in real life.

He told People magazine: "People think I've got to be a tough guy because I play tough guys. But I avoid trouble all the time.

"People seem to think I'm cool. If you spend a day with me, you'll think, 'Really? That's it?'"

However, the 57-year-old actor says you wouldn't want to cross him on the golf course.

Jackson warned: "If I hit a bad shot, people five fairways away know it because I'm yelling. But if I hit a good shot, I'm yelling too. Everybody knows the difference in the yelling."

Meanwhile, 'Snakes on a Plane' failed to live up to its hype at the US box office.

Although the hotly anticipated movie went in at the top spot, it took just $15.3 million in its first weekend - around 25 per cent less than the $20 million plus opening the film's distributor, New Line Cinema, were hoping for.
