Southie may host 'All Souls' movie

Nothing's imminent, of course, but ``All Souls" author Michael Patrick MacDonald tells us there's a strong chance the movie based on his bestseller about growing up in Southie will be shot in Boston. "The neighborhood doesn't look the same anymore," admitted MacDonald. "But Ron says he can make it look just the way it did then." Ron, in case you're wondering, is "Bull Durham" director Ron Shelton, who's been trying for a while to bring MacDonald's poignant story to the big screen. And who might play Mac's mom Helen, the book's true heroine? "Susan Sarandon has been mentioned," said the author, whose latest memoir "Easter Rising" is getting good reviews. "I know it's stupid to cast someone based on appearance, but Julianne Moore looks a lot like my mother did then, and she'd be great." We caught up with MacDonald yesterday in LA, where he'd just done a reading attended by a few of his famous friends, including Shelton; actress Debi Mazar, whom he befriended in the Big Apple years ago; Madonna's brother-in-law, musician Joe Henry; former Bosstone Dicky Barrett; author Tom Kelly; and actress Christine Elise, who grew up in Roslindale. MacDonald said he's a fan of "Entourage," but said he and the show's executive producer, Mark Wahlberg, are not much alike. "The show's brilliant, but I'm horrified by that [Hollywood] existence," said MacDonald. "I've met Mark a few times, but we're different -- he comes from a blue-collar background and I'm more no-collar."

Gillette filming goes according to ‘Plan’

Disney's football flick "The Game Plan" set up shop at Gillette Stadium yesterday, where Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and his castmates ran through their first day of on-field filming. Johnson, who plays a QB in the movie, was mostly shot at the goal line with Gordon Clapp, the "NYPD Blue" actor who plays his coach. While the boys were playing ball, co-star Kyra Sedgwick was spotted working out at The Sports Club/LA. . . . If the Red Sox are intent on celebrating players of the past, they should at least get the names right. In a half-page ad in Sunday's Globe, the late, great Vern Stephens, who played for the Bosox between '48-'52, was spelled "Vern Stevens." Sox flack Charles Steinberg told us he was embarrased by the error, but said the name will be spelled correctly in future ads for the team's Nov. 9th Hall of Fame Gala.

Gleeson to be honored at Irish fest

Actor Brendan Gleeson, who played professor Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and Walter "Monk" McGinn in "Gangs of New York," will be honored at next month's Magners Irish Film Festival. The tribute to the Dubliner will include screenings of his two most recent films, the comedy "Studs" and Brad Gann's locally produced drama "Black Irish." Film historian Harvey O'Brien also will host a retrospective of Gleeson's career that'll include "The Field," "Braveheart," "The General," "Cold Mountain," and "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire."

Stand-ins needed in Rhode Island

Want to stand in for Oscar winners Dianne Wiest or Juliette Binoche? Show up at Saturday's open casting call for Disney's ``Dan in Real Life," which begins shooting this month in Newport, R.I. LDI Casting will be in Warwick all day looking for ``featured background performers," including bikers/street toughs, college boys, teen girls, and women older than 75. They're also looking for a photo-double for Marlene Lawston, 8, who appeared opposite Jodie Foster in ``Flightplan," and stand-ins for Binoche, Wiest, Lawston, Alison Pill, and Brittany Robertson. The film stars Acton's own Steve Carell. . . . New names have joined the line-up for Mohegan Sun's 10th anniversary bash later this month. In addition to previously-announced Jerry Seinfeld, Keith Urban, Kevin Costner, Craig Ferguson, and the Barenaked Ladies, two-time Oscar-winner Michael Caine will make the scene, as will vixen Carmen Electra, ``Rescue Me" lad Michael Lombardi, Joan Allen, Joy Behar of "The View," and "Sopranos" sweetheart Drea de Matteo.

Amherst's Augusten Burroughs walked the red carpet at the LA premiere of "Running With Scissors," based on his book of the same name.

Senator Ted Kennedy and his wife, Vicki, read from his "My Senator and Me" at the Reach Out and Read program at Somerville Pediatrics. Kennedy had earlier received the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems Lifetime Achievement Award.

Correction: Because of a reporting error, this Names column misstated the title of Michael Patrick MacDonald's new book. It is ``Easter Rising."
